Tremiti Islands

The wonderful archipelago of the Tremiti Islands, situated in the Adriatic Sea, consists of three islands: San Domino, San Nicola and Capraia, which is deserted. Those three big islands are surrounded by many islets and rocks as charming as their big sisters. Among them we should remember Pianosa Island, the Cretaccio and the Scoglio La Vecchia. This little corner of paradise is easily reachable by ship or hydrofoil, that sail from Manfredonia, Termoli, Peschici, Vieste, Vasto and Rodi Garganico.

San Domino is the biggest island of the archipelago and it’s the most touristically developed island too. It’s rich in Mediterranean woods and sea cliffs and offers a surprising variety of natural environments. There are lots of caves and coves, such as the beautiful Grotta delle Rondinelle and the charming Grotta delle Viole, which is characterized by the presence of splendid bluish reflections. Grotta del Sale is a wonderful cave too. Cala delle Arene is the only real sandy beach present on the island while Cala Matano is, on the other hand, a natural inlet which slops down into the sea.

Cala Tonda is surrounded by rocks that almost form a lake. San Nicola is the island where the major part of the population resides and it’s the richest one in regard to the monuments. Once there tourists can visit ancient churches and cloisters, castles and imposing towers. This island is rich in caves too: one on the most important one is Grotta della Madonna, but Grotta del Ferrario is delightful too. On the west part of the island coasts are more regulars and easily accessible, with charming gold beaches.

The primitive and simple beauty of Capraia allures tourists as much as its bigger sisters: the island gets its name from the presence of numerous wild caper plants. Even though the vegetation is not to rich, lots of interesting caves plug that gap: the enchanting Cala Sorrentina and the captivating Cala dei Turchi are only two examples of the wonders you can find there. The so-called “architelli”, curious arched rocks, are a feature of Capraia: the biggest one is located near the stately lighthouse, where you can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the Gargano.
